Please reach us at lahabrayouthbowling@gmail.com if you cannot find an answer to your question.
Our primary goal is always for the kids to have fun! We want them to learn about bowling from the general knowledge, to etiquette, to different techniques since everyone should have the opportunity to experience bowling.
There is no specified minimum age to begin bowling in the program. For safety reasons, there are a few things our youth bowlers must be capable of on their own:
- Carry a 6lb bowling ball to the foul line
- Roll the ball towards the pins
- Have the ball reach the pins without stopping and having to be retrieved
- Make it through 2 full games (20 frames) of bowling
Yes, USBC rules state that the Maximum age to bowl in youth programs and tournaments is 18. As long as they have not reached their 18th birthday prior to August 1st of the current bowling season they are still eligible.
We have two bowling seasons, Winter and Summer. They typically start at the beginning of October, and the beginning of May each year. Please contact us for exact starting dates.
The youth program typically bowls every Saturday morning beginning at 10am. However, we have important announcements, along with the tip of the week, and practice that all begin ahead of bowling start. We also offer shadow practice with the coaches starting at 9:15 each week, to allow your youth to get more individualized practice and work on their specific needs.
We suggest at minimum getting your youth to the center around 9:30-9:40 to allow plenty of time to get their equipment ready, shoes on, and allow them to listen to the tip of the week and both of you to hear important announcements.
The answer most of the time is yes! If we have vacant spots on teams we always aim to have those spots filled by any newcomers that join after the season start. If there are no vacancies, we suggest that you chat with some friends and attempt to bring in a full team of bowlers, but please do not hesitate to reach out to us if you want to sign up your youth and need help finding other teammates.
You are more than welcome to help get your youth get set up and ready to bowl. However, when those lane lights come on for practice, only the Coaches and your youth are allowed to be in the bowlers area.
This is due to safety reasons and the requirements of Safesport guidelines. We understand emergencies happen and certain instances it is needed for you to help your youth. They are always welcome to come to you in the upper or lower settee areas for a pep talk, food, drink, or bathroom break.
Life happens, we understand that sometimes you may have other things on your calendar. We offer the option for your youth to pre-bowl any time prior to that week in order for their scores and games to count. There are events such as Bowler of the Year that require a minimum number of games/weeks to be bowled in order to qualify. Otherwise, if you miss those weeks your youth will have their average deducted 5-10 pins to count towards their teams total for the week and those games do not count towards their game count for the season.
We love when friends join in on the fun. As of Winter 2024, our current team requirements is 3 youth members per team. If there are multiple youth that want to join together that is fantastic! Please be aware that because sign-ups happen the morning of the new season, team placement is not guaranteed and we suggest that any family or friends who wish to bowl together arrive and sign up at the same time.
No worries if you do not have others that you want to sign up and bowl with, we do our best during team placement to place as many of our youth together as possible to create an even number of teams.
Scholarships are something that we offer all of our sanctioned (Junior) youth bowlers the ability to earn. Based on league regulations your youth has the opportunity to earn money for college when they bowl well and finish in the top of their division. Additional funds can be earned through tournament play should they choose to participate or qualify. Scholarship money is automatically dispersed as it is earned through the program when you purchase a sanction card for your youth. With their card they become a member of USBC and they gain access to the SMART program where their money is held for them.
Scholarship Management and Account Reporting for Tenpins, also known as SMART, is the program that holds all scholarship money that bowlers earn in their youth bowling careers.
Scholarship funds are available for use after high school graduation. Those funds can be sent directly to a post-secondary educational institution, or may be requested as a reimbursement. Funds would be accessed through USBCs site for SMART.
